The Prehistory of Southwest Briton Continued >

Course content

The southwest peninsula of Britain is a rich resource for the study of prehistoric archaeology. Using evidence from Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, we will explore the prehistory of the region in its British and European context. The course will begin with the oldest evidence dating to the Palaeolithic (Old Stone Age) and continue through the Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We will consider the variety of evidence provided by sites and monuments, such as caves, tombs, standing stones, settlements, forts and their related objects. We will use these to consider current understandings of the social organisation, economies and rituals of the people of the region in prehistory.

Paul Rainbird was formerly Reader in Archaeology and Head of the Department of Archaeology & Anthropology at the University of Wales, Lampeter. He has published extensively including the books The Archaeology of Islands (C.U.P.), Monuments in the Landscape (Tempus) and A Guide to the Archaeology of South Devon (Three Barrows Books). His formal education in archaeology began when he attended classes organised by the former extra-mural department of Exeter University and he went on to gain degrees in archaeology & prehistory from the universities of Sheffield and Sydney.
