Work on the Miners Cottage at Luckett

Work has started on a project to clear, excavate and record a standing 18/19C miners’ cottage. Directed by Robert Waterhouse and coordinated by Caroline Vulliamy The cottage, at SX 389 736, in Lucket village, near Callington, though small, is believed to have housed 14 people at one time! The aim is to clear the site, excavate the interior of the cottage and make a detailed record of the structure, all prior to a degree of restoration by professionals to end up with a community learning resource. The project has very recently secured a grant from The Tamar AONB.

Oldaport Update:

Members will have heard about Oldaport and be aware of the problems of interpretation of this enigmatic site. Its location is on a long spur of high ground, which drops down to the River Erme near Modbury.

Lampeter & Exeter Universities (Paul Rainbird & Derek Gore) are undertaking a joint long-term research project to try and resolve what actually is there. Speculation over the years has suggested Roman, Dark Age, Saxon or Medieval dates for the limited features that have or may have been there. Carbon dating from charcoal flecks in the mortar of a wall gives a 10th Century date. This has prompted revised interest in the site. In September the Project Team asked for funding to assist with a geophysical survey. PDAS gave a grant of £200. The surveys have produced an interesting array of features including ‘banks & ditches’, which will be investigated summer 2009. It is hoped to arrange a visit so that Society members will be able see what is happening.
