Excavation at Morwellham Quay continued >>
Due to Health & Safety considerations, this year’s excavations will not be suitable for younger children. We will be placing an age limit of 16 years and over on the excavation work this year, although a lower age limit of 14 is possible for finds processing. All children under the age of 18 must be accompanied at all times by a responsible parent or guardian.
Smaller children can of course watch some of what we are doing and regular guided tours of the excavations will be given.
All levels of skill are welcome: it doesn't matter if you have little or no experience, as training will be given on the job. Most equipment is provided, but please bring along a small pointing trowel (not a gardening trowel!) and a kneeler.
Insurance is provided by Morwellham Quay Museum as part of its normal service to volunteers. This includes personal accident/injury cover of up to £2 million.
Basic camping facilities are available on site, with toilet/handwashing facilities, but not showers/baths in the village centre. There is also a commercial campsite nearby, at Woodovis Park, about 1.5 miles from Morwellham on the Milton Abbot road. Their telephone number is 01822 832968. Tavistock Leisure Centre at The Meadows, Tavistock, provides shower facilities in association with its public swimming pool and sports centre.
Public transport is poor in West Devon. Although a bus serves Morwellham, it only makes two visits a day. It is therefore advisable to come by car.
