BLACKDOWN RINGS
Leader: Robert Waterhouse
Robert Waterhouse is a freelance archaeologist who has led us on many interesting
trips over the years. This year he has chosen to show us Blackdown Rings (also known
as Loddiswell Rings). This high point in the South Hams is the site of an Iron Age
univallate hillfort with a Norman ringwork and bailey in the NW corner. The IA defences
were recut in the 11th century for use as a large outer bailey -

Backdown Rings are shown by the red marker ‘A’ on the map.
The Car Park is shown by the blue ‘P’ on the map. Meet at 7.00 pm.
Click the marker to see a description. The map below can be scaled and panned in any direction as required using the controls in the top left corner. To print written directions and the map, click the marker then click on “Get directions: To here” (in white box when marker is clicked). Enter the postcode of your location in the textbox and click “Go”.
Zoom into the map to see street names and more detail of your destination. Both directions and map can be printed. The map can also be switched to ‘satelite view’ (top right of frame) to see an aerial photograph of the map area.
